“Woolton Hill
Sports and Social Club beat Bradfield Tennis Club to win the final of the
Newbury and District Lawn Tennis Association’s Yorkshire Cup handicap
competition which was held on Sunday at Yattendon.
The first
round of mens and ladies doubles saw Woolton Hill winning the mens doubles 6-2
and Bradfield winning the ladies
doubles 7-6. The second round saw Woolton Hill winning the mixed doubles 6-2
and 6-2 and the third round also saw Woolton Hill winning 6-3 and 6-3. With
Woollton Hill’s handicap of 14 and Bradfield’s handicap of 9, this gave Woolton
Hill the winning score of 50 games to 28.
The Woolton
Hill team consisted of Cate Poore, Radka Walker, Bob Crichton, Harry Cobb and
the Bradfield team consisted of Lucy Taylor, Tracy Hodson, Andy Woodward and
Phil Rogers.
Peter Smith
(who started the competition and donated the cup) presented the cup to Woolton
Hill.
The Yorkshire
Cup is run by the Newbury and District Lawn Tennis Association as part of the
summer league season and has been running since 1966. The format of the
competition allows clubs of all standards to compete equally and attracted 22
teams from 17 clubs this year. The Newbury and District LTA also runs leagues

The team drawn first for any match will be responsible for arranging the venue of the match.
